ROADS AND UTILITIES

Developing and improving local roadways that meet the transportation needs of our growing communities is a prominent concern for KBA's clients. KBA understands that road construction has its own set of challenges, whether constructing a new road through timber, widening a quiet residential street, or reconstructing a heavily traveled arterial in a busy metropolitan area.

Delridge Rapidride H Line

Client: City of Seattle
Location: Seattle, Washington
2020 - 2023

KBA provided constructability review during design and provided full construction management services for this $60 million project that constructed infrastructure for a Bus Rapid Transit network from the West Seattle Bridge to SW Henderson Street. Work included construction of RapidRide transit stops with shelters, tech pylons, lighting, ORCA readers, and amenities; addition of a southbound protected bike lane; and reconstruction of concrete pavement. Utility work included undergrounding City Light’s 26kV line including trenching, handholes and vaults, and electrical duct bank installation; water main and pressure reducing valve; sanitary sewer main; and storm drainage conveyance and water treatment vaults. The project included modifying 14 existing traffic signals, two new RRFB signals, and ITS infrastructure along Delridge Way SW.

SR 522 Improvements, Phase 3

Client: City of Bothell
Location: Bothell, Washington
2019 - 2022

KBA provided constructability review, scheduling, construction management, and inspection services for this $21.5 million road improvement project. The 4,000 LF project provided road improvements and Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes from the end of the Stage 1 and 2 improvements in Bothell and connects to the same facilities in Kenmore. Key elements included widening of general purpose lanes; adding BAT lanes in each direction; access management; center medians; interconnection of signals; sidewalk; curb and gutters; retaining walls; street illumination; drainage improvements; landscaping; and utility undergrounding.

2019 AAC Package 1 (N 40th, N 50th, Green Lake, and N 80th)

Client: Seattle Department of Transportation
Location: Seattle, Washington
2019 - 2021

KBA provided construction management and inspection services for this $23.2 million multiple roadway restoration project in the Wallingford and Green Lake areas. The project included work on N 40th, N 50th, W & E Green Lake Drive N and E, Green Lake Way N, Green Lake Drive N, and N 80th Street. Work consists of roadway panel replacement; grind and overlay; 550 curb ramps; new, enhanced, or upgraded bike lanes; sidewalk repair and replacement; new signals and lighting; and SPU utility improvements. The project had over 150 traffic control plans and involves TESC measures.

124th Avenue NE - NE Spring Boulevard to NE Ichigo Wa

Client: City of Bellevue
Location: Bellevue, Washington
2019 - 2021

KBA provided construction management services in the BelRed area for the $13 million, quarter-mile first phase of widening 124th Avenue NE from NE Spring Boulevard to NE Ichigo Way. With a nine-month road closure to thru traffic, significant coordination with utilities, businesses, adjacent projects, and the public was required to keep business access open while progressing on contract work. The concurrent Sound Transit East Link work at the bridge site resulted in changing site conditions. KBA managed the multiple changes by cultivating great relationships with the contractor, design engineer, and the City of Bellevue.

SR 169 Road Widening

Client: City of Maple Valley
Location: Maple Valley, Washington
2019 - 2020

KBA provided full CM services for the City of Maple Valley's $4.8 million street widening project. The most notable feature of this project was the use of a soldier pile wall, which permitted the addition of a commuter lane, bike lane, and sidewalk. A comprehensive drainage system was installed, as well as a state-of-the-art infiltration system. During KBA's initial review of the project, it was determined a few items the designer incorporated into the project were not actually needed based on KBA's knowledge of the area's geological make-up. By eliminating these items (structural soil and pedestrian handrail), we were able to reallocate resources to renovating an entire intersection that was not in the original design. The resulting changes and upgrades were completed within the original timeframe.

SE 62nd Street Extension

Client: City of Issaquah
Location: Issaquah, Washington
2017 - 2019

KBA provided full construction management services for the extension of SE 62nd Street from East Lake Sammamish Parkway to Lake Drive. The project constructed a connecting roadway and two roundabouts, a multi-use trail connection, and sidewalks. Significant coordination with utilities, businesses, and the public was required to keep business access open. Before construction began, the contractor proposed to re-design the bridge with 36” diameter pipe piles, 70’ and 90’ long. When bearing resistance was not achieved as expected, KBA coordinated with the Geotech, general contractor, designer, and client to revise the plans and solve the issue in real time. KBA established great relationships with all stakeholders, allowing better communication and collaboration to coordinate real time resolutions to conflicting project demands.

Main Street Enhancement

Client: City of Bothell
Location: Bothell, Washington
2017 - 2018

Working as a part of a blended City team, KBA provided construction management and inspection support for this $5.7 million project that revitalized Main Street. The project made a major contribution to the economic health of downtown Bothell, particularly after the area suffered through a major fire affecting businesses in 2016. The Main Street Enhancement Project constructed a pedestrian-friendly downtown urban center by reworking the entire streetscape that included straightening the street’s curved alignment, adding a new curbless street system with removable bollards, and unique flex zone grading increased pedestrian mobility, facility usage, and corrected existing drainage problems.

3rd Avenue Arterial Asphalt and Concrete (AAC)

Client: Seattle DOT
Location: Seattle, Washington
2017 - 2018

This $5.8 million project included complex elements that required effective communications between SDOT, SPU, and the contractor. Working with SDOT Public Outreach was also a key element of the project. To reduce impacts to public, SDOT requested the project be accelerated by cutting 25 working days from the 190 working days allowed in the contract. KBA worked with the contractor, King County Metro, and SDOT to “clear the path” of “speed bumps” that could slow progress. Buried remains of an old railroad trolley alignment was found along 75% of the project. Complicating the removal of this debris was its location over SPU’s water main, which has vibration restrictions within a 20-foot horizontal zone. We were able to work with the contractor to revise their removal of this pavement zone to minimize the cost of this changed condition and not impact working days.

Central Avenue S Pavement Preservation and Utility Improvements

Client: City of Kent
Location: Kent, Washington
2015 - 2018

KBA provided construction management and inspection services on this $5.8 million federally funded pavement preservation and utility improvement project. Project work consisted of installing new curb, gutter, and sidewalk; pavement repair, grinding, and overlay; cast-in-place sewer lining; waterline installation; electrical conduit trenching and installation; and signal loop installation.

Client: City of Kenmore
Location: Kenmore, Washington
2014 - 2018

KBA provided construction management and inspection services for this $10 million project that included widened travel and Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes, additional turning lanes at the key intersection (61st/SR 522), signal improvements, illumination, ADA access management, retaining walls, center medians, sidewalks, drainage improvements, landscaping, and utility conversion to underground. Work also included treatments to the Burke-Gilman Trail, building a new traffic signal, and improving the pedestrian crossing.

SR 99 Aurora Corridor Improvements

Client: City of Shoreline
Location: Shoreline, Washington
2008 - 2016

KBA provided on-site construction management and inspection services for the multi-phase $52 million Aurora Corridor Improvements project, which improved and enhanced three miles along heavily-traveled Aurora Avenue North (SR 99) in Shoreline. Managing the flow of traffic through the project area was a significant priority and the KBA CM team’s excellent communication and coordination efforts with the City of Shoreline, SPU, SCL, the contractor, and other affected parties were instrumental in facilitating the smooth flow of traffic while keeping the project on schedule.
